THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
==================
(for October 16, 1993)
Rakvere, Estonia was the site of a recent double round-robin
tournament between six top Grandmasters. Each was the best,
or among the best, that his country had to offer: Jaan
Ehlvest, the local favorite and number one player from
Estonia; Poland's highest rated player, Alex Wojtkiewicz;
Eduard Rozentalis, the top player from neighboring Lithuania;
Russian Alexander Khalifman, tied for twelfth in the world on
the recent FIDE rating list; American Alex Yermolinsky and
the several-time British Champion, Julian Hodgson. Khalifman
was ranked first at 2640, while Wojtkiewicz was at the
opposite end, at 2570. The average rating of the six was a
lofty 2611, good enough for FIDE Category 15 status.
Not surprisingly, the competition was close throughout as
three players tied for first. Khalifman, Ehlvest and
Rozentalis finished at 5.5-4.5, one-half point ahead of
Wojtkiewicz. Hodgson and Yermolinsky trailed with 4.5 and 4
points, respectively.
Although about one-third of the games ended in relatively
short draws, many of the remaining contests were hard fought
throughout and often featured an eruption of tactical
fireworks. Despite his last place finish, Yermolinsky
produced one of the tournament's best games with a dramatic
rook sacrifice in the middle of a nearly full board of
pieces.
